Ramón Sampedro
July 26, 2004

Well, I've seen it, the most eagerly-awaited Spanish film of the season, and I think that maybe it's a masterpiece. A Spanish masterpiece, at least. And the good news is that it's one Spanish film that will almost certainly be playing at a cinema near you before too long. Almodóvar's Almodóvar, and that's fine, but Amenábar, who's still only 32, has it in him to be the finest Spanish movie director ever. What is it with these people with multi-syllabic names beginning with "A"? The man in the picture is the remarkable Ramón Sampedro, played to perfection by Javier Bardem in the film.
