Sad Update

Two men died and two more were injured while dismantling the Stones' stage set following Thursday night's concert at the Vicente Calderón. The Stones have sent their condolences to the families, but they could probably do a bit more than that if they wanted.

I've never liked stadium rock. But the Stones are playing tonight at the Vicente Calderón stadium, Atlético de Madrid's soccer ground, about five minutes walk from here, and I can stand on our balcony and hear distorted versions of "Tumblin' Dice" and "Let's Spend the Night Together" and all the others coming through the warm night air, and I'm severely regretting not buying a ticket. I took a stroll down there a few minutes ago and there were little groups of people hanging around, frustrated like me, peering past the security guards into the stadium in the hope of getting a glimpse. Such a gulf in the atmospheres between inside and out. They're filling the barrio with their music. I've never liked stadium rock. But I should have made an exception tonight.
