I've never liked stadium rock. But the Stones are playing tonight at the Vicente Calderón stadium, Atlético de Madrid's soccer ground, about five minutes walk from here, and I can stand on our balcony and hear distorted versions of "Tumblin' Dice" and "Let's Spend the Night Together" and all the others coming through the warm night air, and I'm severely regretting not buying a ticket. I took a stroll down there a few minutes ago and there were little groups of people hanging around, frustrated like me, peering past the security guards into the stadium in the hope of getting a glimpse. Such a gulf in the atmospheres between inside and out. They're filling the barrio with their music. I've never liked stadium rock. But I should have made an exception tonight.

My daughter Janessa Law is studying right now in Madrid at Don Quijote School and snagged a ticket a few days ago. Looking at the time here in I suspect she has returned to her flat by now. I will let you know if she had a good time. Sorry that we are not there with all of you.
