Counseling was something I was ashamed to talk about when I first started going. I thought it meant I was weak, but I have found that the exact opposite is true. I started going to counseling about 2 years ago because I needed help with stress management. I was beginning to feel the effects of stress in my life and decided I needed to find a way to deal with it. That was when I found Dr. Bridges. She has helped me learn different coping techniques and ways to manage the stress in my life in a positive way as well as how to reduce it. I have learned how to have a healthier work-life balance and my health has improved. I was having trouble sleeping, staying focused at work and feeling physically drained. In learning how to prioritize things at work and at home I have been able to overcome and positively deal with the stress that I face daily both at work and at home. It has been an eye-opening process in which I have learned that a lot of the problem was me placing stress on myself.
I had a habit of expecting myself to be able to handle everything in my life on my own and wasn’t willing to ask for help. I saw asking for help as a sign of weakness and would do whatever I needed to in order to not have to ask anyone for help. I have learned that asking for help is not a weakness and it can be strength. To know one’s limits and to know when you need help doing something or figuring something out is something that I have learned with Ms. Bridges help. She has helped me to see that I am not alone in the world and that relying on others is part of life. I can’t do everything on my own and not become overloaded.
When I feel that life or a situation in becoming overwhelming I take time to focus on my breathing first. I have learned that this helps me to refocus on what I need to do. I then go thru a process of accessing the problem and who might be able to help. I can then ask for help if I need it so that I can achieve the end result without it affecting my health and my overall life. Now after 2 years I can say that I have a much better handle on things and have learned to maintain a healthy balance of work and life. I am sleeping better, have more energy and focusing on what I am dealing with at the moment is so much easier because I don’t have several other things that are racing thru my head at the same time. I focus on one thing at a time. When I started this endeavor I could not have imagined feeling as good as I do now and I am so glad that I made the decision to seek counseling to learn to cope with the stress in my life.
