Sad Update

June 30, 2007

Two men died and two more were injured while dismantling the Stones' stage set following Thursday night's concert at the Vicente Calderón. The Stones have sent their condolences to the families, but they could probably do a bit more than that if they wanted.

Los Rolling

I've never liked stadium rock. But the Stones are playing tonight at the Vicente Calderón stadium, Atlético de Madrid's soccer ground, about five minutes walk from here, and I can stand on our balcony and hear distorted versions of "Tumblin' Dice" and "Let's Spend the Night Together" and all the others coming through the warm night air, and I'm severely regretting not buying a ticket. I took a stroll down there a few minutes ago and there were little groups of people hanging around, frustrated like me, peering past the security guards into the stadium in the hope of getting a glimpse. Such a gulf in the atmospheres between inside and out. They're filling the barrio with their music. I've never liked stadium rock. But I should have made an exception tonight.

Nena Daconte

Best New Artist Award in Spain's prestigious Premio Ondas: Nena Daconte, featuring Mai from Madrid (a former (unsuccessful) Operación Triunfo contestant, no less) and Kim from Barcelona; they're apparently named after this García Márquez character. Gentle, plain, simple, intelligent and often affecting music. Wonderfully original it ain't, but then you can't expect that these days. A couple of their things can be heard here, and look out for their album.

Hip-Jote

One of the more offbeat offshoots of the 400th anniversary of Don Quixote is a hiphop version of it by Frank T, La Excepción, Dani Pannullo and others that was broadcast tonight on Radio 3. I thought I'd hate it, but it's actually listenable. Who said that high culture and popular culture don't mix? This sort of project shows that the distinction is probably outmoded. To see a video clip, go here and scroll down. (It'll probably disappear from the site very quickly.)

Two Spanish nominees for the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards, 2005: Amparanioa and Ojos de Brujo. Both worth your time, and probably also your money.
